FAQs.
Creative Connection isn’t just an art class. Creative Connection offers counselling sessions for teens, tweens and children with a Level 3 Master Counsellor. We explore emotional understanding through artistic expression. And we make it fun.
We provide a comprehensive range of support, including one-on-one psychological therapy, full cognitive assessments, and term-long creative counselling group programs. Whether you need diagnostic clarity or group-based emotional literacy building, our research-driven services are tailored to children, tweens, teens, and adults.
Emotional literacy is the ability to identify, understand, and appropriately express your feelings. Championed by psychologist Daniel Goleman (author of Emotional Intelligence), it is a critical foundation for resilience, healthy relationships, and lifelong mental wellbeing.
In every session, we talk about emotions. That is, naming and describing how we are feeling. We discuss how the feeling looks, feels, and sounds. We also talk about what to do when we feel a negative emotion. From there, the session is guided by the group’s open conversation as we create artwork. And most importantly, every session helps build emotional literacy.
Our Founder, Jen Ryan, is a Level 3 Master Counsellor and guides every session. Jen holds a Master's in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Photography, a Graduate Diploma in Education, and a Bachelor of Business. She is also a registered teacher with a Blue Card, NDIS Clearance Card and First Aid Certificate.
Our individual psychology and cognitive assessment services are available for all ages, including adults. For our group creative programs, children need to be able to sit, listen, and engage, so around 5 to 6 years of age is a great time to start. Our general age brackets for groups are:
- Children: 5–8 years
- Tweens: 9–13 years
- Teens: 13–18 years
We offer four different programs:
- Comprehensive Cognitive Assessments (Conducted by our Psychologist).
- One-on-One Individual Therapy (Personalised psychological support or creative counselling).
- Group Creative Counselling: Our 8-week group creative counselling program.
We cultivate an open, safe, and non-judgmental environment. Each week focuses on a different emotional or wellbeing topic. Common themes include navigating worry, positive self-talk, body image, healthy friendships, communication, and gratitude.
Our welcoming clinic and art studio is located at 18 Blandford Street, The Grange, on the north side of Brisbane. Free parking is available behind the clinic or on the street.
For individual assessments and psychology sessions, parent involvement depends on the child's age and specific needs. For our group programs, we encourage parents to drop and go, as participants often feel more comfortable sharing openly with their peers when parents aren't in the room. However, you are always welcome to wait in our comfortable waiting area.
